Until mid-2004, the Hotel Europa had deteriorated over the course of decades, a mere shell of its former splendor. Its location, an avenue off the Colonial Zone’s more traveled path, nearly rendered it out of sight, out of mind.

Then Spanish developers showed up with money to burn and within six months took the hotel from blight to beauty, leaving almost nothing untouched except the exquisite original terrazo floors and the building’s ornate exterior with its filigree iron balconies.

Most rooms have at least one of those balconies but you’ll find that the views of sunsets and illuminated colonial ruins are dreamiest from the rooftop Terraza Restaurant and Bar.

A standard room with queen-size bed is spacious enough, but for just a little more check-in to a junior suite if available; with twice the space and a double balcony it’s one of the best deals in the city.
