The “Park of the East” encompasses the southern-most tip of a peninsula jutting from the country’s Caribbean coast about two hours east of the capital. Inside this expansive park is an impressive array of birdlife and intricate hiking trails leading to caves with drawings depicting pre-Columbian Taino life. Visitors can hire park rangers for a two-hour guided hike to view pictographs recording the habits of the early inhabitants and other drawings reputed to document the arrival of Spanish conquistadors. The most visited spot within this protected area, though, is Isla Saona, a small island off the southern tip of the peninsula with miles of beautiful beach and, in selected areas, ideal spots for snorkeling and diving. Visit the national park office in Playa Bayahibe to coordinate entry into the park.
