Few visitors to the Dominican Republic know about this idyllic seaside hamlet, yet it is just a few more minutes drive from Casa Ponce de Leon – the 16th-century home of the Spanish conquistador. Perhaps the most charming setting in the country, Boca de Yuma sits along an ocean-pounded bluff overlooking sheltered coves like the one to the east of town from where local fisherman will row beachgoers over to Playa Borinquen, a quiet little beach frequented mostly by locals.
The main artery in Boca de Yuma is about half the size of a city block and runs along the perimeter of the coast which is marked by a pretty little park containing remnants of a wall and a cannon that protected villagers back in the days when Boca de Yuma was an outpost for conquering the eastern-half of the island.
Directions: Boca de Yuma sits at the end of a long well-paved secondary road off the stretch of south coast highway between Bayahibe and the Bávaro & Punta Cana areas.
Facilities: Seafood restaurant. Park. Beach.
