The Dominican Republic has long been the host of the filming of many Hollywood films, but the country has begun developing its own film industry as well. And because of the Dominican International Film Festival, the island is taking its place as a leader of film in the Caribbean.

Here is a list of films about Dominicans, starring Dominicans, and filmed in the Dominican Republic.

“Sugar” (2008)

“Sanky Panky” (2007)

In this comedic film,, audiences follow the life of a young Dominican man named Genaro (played by Dominican comedian Fausto Mata) who travels to Bavaro on a mission to find a “gringa” who will help him obtain a visa. “Yuniol” (2007)

“Yuniol” Perez and Alberto “Junior” Rios are two Dominicans cut from very different cloth. Aloof and out of touch, Alberto comes from an affluent family. Ambitious and hard-working, Juan is raised by a loving single mother.  This film is about the joyful Dominican way of life, despite the disparity between rich and poor that exists in the
country.

“Andrea: La Venganza de un Espiritu” (2005)
