At eatdrinksleep.com we believe in giving back to the community that
has provided us with so much. The D.R. beaches are beautiful and the
resorts some of the most luxurious in the Caribbean. But it is the
wonderful Dominican people who work to make every stay memorable, which
is why we give to Casa Rojo, a non-profit organization that aims to
improve the lives of orphaned children in La Romana.

Listed below is a selection of local charities also working to improve
the communities they work in and who accept donations from visitors
like you. The tourist-based organizations especially welcome gifts of
supplies for rural schools in many of the communities where resorts are
located.

Smiles Foundation

For 14 years, Sonrisas has been dedicated to improving the oral health of the Dominican population with special emphasis placed on the education and treatment of children.
Since its inception Sonrisas has expanded its reach significantly with seven permanent and five mobile units. These clinics were the first and continue to be the only to offer dental treatments at no cost to children and at less than half the cost of private clinics to adults. These clinics act as both treatment and education centers and have become an integral part of the communities.
Sonrisas is the Dominican counterpart to the registered Canadian charitable organization Smiles Foundation. Both foundations have the same President, mission, and goals. The Canadian foundation was registered in 1998 to support the programs in the Dominican Republic.

Caritas Dominicanas

The Caritas International network is the largest non-government aid and development agency in the world. It has consultative status with the World Food Programme, UNESCO and UNICEF.
Caritas works with the poorest and most marginalized communities, regardless of ethnicity, religion or nationality. Caritas works through partnerships with local organizations and Church structures. Caritas does not set up its own offices, or send staff overseas to work permanently. This is a low cost way to operate, and ensures that the local community is strengthened and has ownership of the project, which results in real needs being identified and met.
Caritas supports a wide variety of project work including supplying drinking water and irrigation, teaching sustainable farm management, strengthening primary health care, developing new skills and credit for small businesses, and working with women and indigenous peoples. Caritas development projects receive government subsidies of one to two for every four donated, meaning donor support goes further.

Outback Safari “Helping the Needy”

At Outback Safari we support the local environment to the best of our ability by providing funds for medicine and scholarships or by distributing educational materials and clothing to local schools, orphanages, and communities where the need is greatest.
Much of this has been achieved with the help of our kind-hearted and generous customers who have purchased safari hats and T-shirts from us (of which a portion of the profits is donated to charity), or by bringing/shipping goods directly to us.
