There are many reasons why Vesuvio, now in its third generation of family ownership and management, is the oldest restaurant in Santo Domingo.

The three-tiered antipasto cart, brought within moments of our arrival and drink orders and packed with savoury treats like octopus, sausage and grilled eggplant to whet our appetites, should count for at least ten of them.

The twin “earth” and “sea” menus are two more. Both feature a broad selection of Italian and local appetizers and entrées. For the seafood lover, the creamy lobster bisque is a great start, and the pasta entrées come topped with your choice of shellfish. From the “earth,” the watercress cream soup is a refreshing accompaniment to a steak, or ravioli stuffed with ricotta cheese and spinach. Perennial favourites like Caesar salad and minestrone soup are also available and given a touch of class with attractive presentation by the friendly and attentive waitstaff.

Be sure to leave room for dessert, too – the coconut flan is a traditional Dominican favourite, and light enough to be the perfect guilt-free finish to your meal.

With 54 years of experience, the Bonarelli family knows that service and style go a long way towards surviving in a competitive market, so if you’re visiting Santo Domingo or looking for an elegant yet relaxed ambience to enhance a special occasion, you won’t want to miss out on this delicious piece of the city’s history.
