After retiring from cooking for the United Nations in Geneva, the Swiss proprietor must have really wanted to get away from it all, opening up this uncommon “deli” in a little village some 40 minutes drive east of Santo Domingo.

Despite the location, a loyal fan base still negotiates the long drive for langoustines in garlic and butter and the chef salad with beef. Desserts such as apple pie with cinnamon and chocolate mousse are both flavorful and creative in presentation. Another draw is the extensive wine collection (lauded several times over by Wine Spectator Magazine).

The back porch, which faces a pristine strip of nearly deserted beach, becomes a Sunday hot-spot for a cigar-smoking, Scotch-sipping crowd. Put any notions of your typical deli aside here.
