Mandeep Rai: newsthatmoves.com
Journalist Mandeep Rai has worked in over 30 different countries, most recently covering the Dominican Republic for ‘eatdrinksleep’. Her broadcasting career began with the BBC World Service, and since then, she has also worked for the United Nations, Reuters, Channel News Asia, South Africa Broadcasting Corporation, Times of India, and several other broadcasters around the world. She has reported, produced and presented for TV, radio and online, and is now also delving into the world of new media.
Whilst in the Dominican Republic, within a week, Mandeep was able to interview everyone and anyone about the future of the island. From large business tycoons the likes of Leon, to Miss World’s fashion designer Leonel Lirio, and from world-renowned singer Julio Iglesias to the president of the nation itself, Leonel Fernandez, each had valuable lessons and creative visions to share about how to better the Dominican Republic.
Mandeep Rai’s academic background is in economics, politics and development. After working at the grassroots level with NGOs in Asia and Africa, she came back to London to specialize in International Development, leading to her graduating with a Masters from the London School of Economics. After completing her first degree, she followed her business instincts and joined the world of private banking at JP Morgan, and since then she has followed her entrepreneurial spirit, working within the Entrepreneurial DG at the European Commission in Brussels, helping to create and support a flourishing entrepreneurial environment. She has also inspired and set up several projects of her own; thus, her adventures in media, business and international development continue.
In her spare time, Mandeep pursues many interests, but loves sports (in particular, ghatka, a sword-based martial art), creative writing and, most of all, photography. She speaks five languages, and has visited over 70 countries, led by her desire to experience, explore and be the ears and eyes for us all.
